Lisa is hired as a new assistant at Goode's department store in Sydney during the 1959 Christmas season. She makes friends with Fay, who is initially wary of immigrants, Patty, who seeks more attention from her husband, and Magda, an immigrant from Slovenia who introduces her to her other European friends. Magda invites Lisa and Fay to a New Year's Eve party at Magda's house and introduces Fay to Rudi, a Hungarian immigrant who is looking for a wife. Lisa is introduced to Michael, the son of Hungarian immigrants to Australia. In this turmoil, Lisa learn to grow up and find her way.

 

Bruce Beresford

Born in 1940 in Sydney, Australia, he began his career at the British Film Institute where he directed the production department from 1966 to 1970. Renowned for his staging of operas, he directed nearly fifty films including The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972), Don's Party (1976), The Getting of Wisdom (1978), Breaker Morant (1980), Puberty Blues (1981),  The Fringe Dwellers (1986), Black Robe (1991), Mao's Last Dancer (2009), but also in the USA the Oscar winner Driving Miss Daisy (1989), Tender Mercies (1983), Crimes of the Heart (1986), Mister Johnson (1990), A Good Man in Africa (1994), Last Dance (1996), Double Jeopardy (1999), Evelyn (2002), Peace, Love & Misunderstanding (2011), Mr. Church (2016)
