Frédéric has been many things - a young rebel in Paris, ethnomusicologist, and executive of a multinational garbage business. But after decades living abroad he’s returned to a France on edge with terror attacks, and the rise of nationalist politics. Through four generations of his family a pastiche of French history is revealed: his grandfather a Governor in colonial Cambodia, his father Charles Duvelle whose pioneering African, his niece Elvire an activist with FEMEN, and his daughter Marion. His wry encounters on the streets, in cafes, brocante shops, and over lunch with neighbours create a compelling portrait by an outsider - with questions of what it is to be French in the 21st century.
