Premiere (ARTE 2021)

Detective Jay Swan takes on a grisly new case in the small coastal community of Gideon in Northern WA, where the red sand meets the turquoise blue sea and people go for a fresh start or to bury their past. When the case unexpectedly becomes linked to an outback drug syndicate boss Jay has been chasing for years, he enters a world where deception is king. He also crosses paths with his former wife Mary, who moved to Gideon to rebuild her life. When Jay begins investigating the murder, the body count rises as he uncovers more dark secrets the town is hiding.

 

Warwick Thornton

Born and raised in Alice Spring, he is an Australian director, screenwriter and cinematographer. He graduated from Australia’s prestigious film school AFTRS. He directed many short films including Payback, Mimi, Nana and Greenbush. His first feature Samson and Delilah premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009, winning the Caméra d’Or. Next, he completed his feature The Darkside, a film which presents well know Australian actors retelling Indigenous ghost stories. Following this, he directed the opening segment of Tim Winton’s The Turning and the opening segment of Guillermo Arriaga’s Words With Gods, which was invited to premiere at Venice in 2014. He is also widely regarded for his work as a cinematographer which include the 2012 hit musical The Sapphires and Septembers of Shiraz both from director Wayne Blair. Warwick Thornton was named Northern Territory Australian of the Year in 2010. In 2017, his documentary We Don’t Need a Map about Australia’s connection to the Southern Cross premiered at the Sydney Film Festival and his second feature film Sweet Country won Jury Price at Venice. In 2020 he directed 3 episodes of Mystery Road Season 2 and documentary TV series The Beach.

 

Wayne Blair

Wayne Blair is an acclaimed Aboriginal film, television and theatre director, writer, actor and producer. He directed the hit series Love Child (Series 6) and Bite Club (Series 1) and worked as an actor on Mystery Road (Series 1). He also co-produced and directed the series Cleverman. Wayne’s television directing credits include Redfern Now and Lockie Leonard Series 1 & 2. He directed many plays including The Removalists, Romeo and juliet, Brendan Cowell’s play Ruben Guthrie. He also directed several shorts (The Djarn Djarns, Black talk) and has appeared as an actor in many theatre productions and films. Wayne’s debut hit feature film, The Sapphires, a musical comedy had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. He directed Septembers of Shiraz (2015) and has most recently directed successful feature film Top End Wedding (2019)
