In early 1950s Australia, after working for many years as a dressmaker in exclusive Parisian fashion houses, Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet), a beautiful and talented misfit, returns home to the tiny middle-of-nowhere town of Dungatar to right the wrongs of the past. Not only does she reconcile with her ailing, eccentric mother Molly (Judy Davis), and unexpectedly falls in love with the pure-hearted Teddy (Liam Hemsworth), but armed with her sewing machine and incredible sense of style, Tilly sets out to right the wrongs of the past and transform the women of the town.

 

Jocelyn Moorhouse

Jocelyn Moorhouse, a native of Melbourne, has worked in both the Australian television and film industry. She is graduated from AFTRS (1984). She made her directorial debut in 1991 with "Proof". The film earned instant critical acclaim in Australia and abroad. The winner of six Australian Film Institute Awards, "Proof" also won numerous prizes at international film festivals from Cannes to Tokyo.  She directed her first 'big Hollywood picture' "How to Make an American Quilt" in 1995. Followed by an adaptation of Jane Smiley's award-winning novel "A Thousand Acres". In 2001, she was also the screenwriter and producer for "Unconditional Love", her second project with her husband, director P.J. Hogan ("Muriel's Wedding" (1994), which Moorhouse produced). She also executive produced "Peter Pan" and produced Mental in 2012. Her last film, "The Dressmaker" was a huge box office success with more that 20 million AUS$. It was nominated for 13 ACTAA Awards and won 4 and it also won 4 awards at the Australian Film Critics Association Awards.
