THE REDFERN STORY

THEREDFERNSTORY

Australia / 2014 / 57 min / DCP

Director : Darlene Johnson

Sydney Festival 2014

The National Black Theatre movement in Redfern, Sydney formed at a very crucial time in Australian political history, culminating with the establishment of a political movement and the setting up of a number of significant Aboriginal organisations. In the early ’70s, Aboriginal political activism took to the stage with the first all-Indigenous theatre company. Against the backdrop of street protests, a group of actors and activists created a voice for their community; the theatre became a social hub where Indigenous identity could be explored. The National Black Theatre has left a lasting legacy on national politics, social welfare and the Australian arts scene.
